Jose Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines, spent his final years of exile in Dapitan, where he lived for four years. The location is marked by a rich history, part of which was even related by Rizal. He allegedly planted gumamela (hibiscus) and acacia trees to beautify the center plaza and assisted in the creation of a relief map of Mindanao to impart geographic knowledge to the populace. He constructed a home for his family on the 16 hectares of land that is now known as The Rizal Shrine Park after winning a modest jackpot. Take a break from your agenda to see this memorial to a national hero and take in the serene ambience of the park.
