The city of Iligan is home to at least 23 waterfalls, with an additional 39 identified by local barangay chiefs. The National Power Corporation harnessed the Maria Cristina Falls, the most well-known of these, in the 1950s. The falls produce electricity that powers virtually the entire island of Mindanao in addition to the city of Iligan. Iligan City gained notoriety as the "Pittsburgh of the South" in the 1950s and 1960s as a result of various manufacturing facilities choosing to locate there.
A few of the factories that were constructed at the time include a steel plant, a coco oil mill factory, a flour mill, cement factories, a gas processing plant, and a chemical plant. These plants are regarded as the primary source of the city's financial stability and provided the city with its lifeblood. Also available for educational trips are these factories. Along with its numerous waterfalls, Iligan City is the location of the renowned Timoga Springs, which houses the Timoga bathing pools. The waters in these pools are renowned for being immaculate, chilly, and clear.
